Opposition slam ‘wasteful spending’ on new £10 million cycle path

North Tyneside’s Labour-run Council have been slammed for wasting taxpayers money after it was revealed the proposed cycle path on the seafront will cost at least £10 million.

The proposals will see roads and pavements between Tynemouth and St Mary’s lighthouse narrowed in order to create cycle paths on each side of the road. Trials of the scheme which took place in 2021 were deeply unpopular with residents.

Speaking about the plan, Liam said “We have already seen the chaos caused by the new Dutch-style roundabout at Rake Lane. Spending £10 million on this plan in the current climate is absolute madness.

“To put it into context, the entire highways budget to bring our roads up to scratch is just £2 million - imagine what an impact this money could have on existing roads and pavements!

“This is yet another poorly planned vanity project from Labour Councillors more interested in a photo opportunity than delivering for residents.”
